HMG-Lepori is a pharmaceutical preparation of human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG), commonly referred to as menotropins, which is extracted and purified from the urine of postmenopausal women. It contains a 1:1 bioactivity ratio of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), typically standardized to 75 IU of each per vial. HMG-Lepori is primarily indicated for the treatment of infertility in both women and men. In women, it is utilized to induce ovulation in those with anovulation (including cases of polycystic ovary syndrome) that have not responded to clomiphene citrate, as well as to stimulate the development of multiple follicles in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). In men, it is indicated for the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism to stimulate spermatogenesis, usually in combination with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The FSH component acts on receptors in the ovaries or testes to promote follicular maturation and Sertoli cell function, while the LH component supports steroidogenesis and final gamete maturation.
