The extract is currently being investigated in academic and preclinical research settings for its wide range of therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, neuroprotective, antileishmanial, and anti-cancer activities. It comprises a complex mixture of bioactive components, predominantly triterpenoid saponins, glycosides, terpenoids, steroids, and fatty acids such as decanoic acid, oleic acid, and cis-13-eicosenoic acid. In preclinical models of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, the extract mitigates amyloid-beta proteotoxicity and alpha-synuclein aggregation by activating the DAF-16/FOXO and SKN-1/Nrf2 stress-response pathways.
