Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Holy basil extract** is a standardized preparation derived from the leaves of *Ocimum tenuiflorum* (also known as tulsi), a perennial plant native to India and revered in Ayurveda as an adaptogen that helps the body respond to stress and restore normal physiologic function. It contains bioactive compounds such as eugenol, ursolic acid, rosmarinic acid, β-caryophyllene, and ocimumosides, which contribute to its pleiotropic effects including modulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathoadrenal medullary (SAM) system to buffer stress responses, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, blood glucose lowering, lipid reduction, and antimicrobial properties. Clinical trials have demonstrated benefits in reducing perceived stress, anxiety, cortisol levels, and improving sleep quality at doses of 250-1200 mg/day, with potential applications in diabetes management, asthma symptom relief, and cardiovascular protection, though long-term safety data is limited.[1][2][4][6]
