Overview

Homatropine methylbromide + hydrocodone bitartrate is a fixed-ratio combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients: hydrocodone, a centrally acting opioid agonist with antitussive (cough suppressant) effects, and homatropine, a peripherally acting muscarinic antagonist. This product is indicated for the symptomatic relief of cough in adults who do not respond to other therapies and whose cough is not productive or due to acute febrile illness or lower respiratory tract disease. It is not recommended for use in pediatric patients under 18 years of age due to risks of addiction, abuse, respiratory depression, and accidental overdose. The drug carries significant warnings regarding the potential for addiction, abuse, misuse, life-threatening respiratory depression, accidental ingestion (especially in children), and drug interactions with cytochrome P450 3A4 inhibitors and inducers. Dosage should be carefully measured and not exceeded, and therapy duration should be as short as possible. The combination aims to suppress cough by central nervous system action (hydrocodone) and minimize potential opioid-induced gastrointestinal effects and lower risk of abuse (homatropine) through its anticholinergic activity[1][2].
