Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Homofen is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) aceclofenac (100 mg) and the muscle relaxant thiocolchicoside (4 mg). Developed and marketed by Abigail Care Pharmaceutical (also known as Abigail Healthcare) under their Homogreen Products range, it is approved in India for the treatment of acute painful musculoskeletal conditions associated with muscle spasms, such as lower back pain, neck stiffness, and muscle strains. Aceclofenac acts by preferentially inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thereby reducing the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Thiocolchicoside is a semi-synthetic derivative of colchicoside that acts as a competitive gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor antagonist and glycine receptor agonist/antagonist, which helps alleviate muscle spasms and stiffness through central inhibitory pathways. Together, the two components provide synergistic relief by targeting both the inflammatory pain and the underlying muscle spasticity.
