Homosalate is an oil-soluble organic compound from the salicylates family used as a chemical sunscreen agent. It is an ester formed from salicylic acid and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol. Homosalate functions primarily as a UVB absorber (protecting against wavelengths of approximately 295–315 nm), helping to prevent sunburn and DNA damage associated with skin cancer. Its mechanism involves absorbing short-wave UVB rays and converting their energy into heat through photoprotection. Homosalate is not photostable on its own and degrades under sunlight exposure; therefore it is often combined with other sunscreen agents for broad-spectrum protection. It does not provide significant UVA protection and must be formulated with other filters for full-spectrum efficacy[1][6][8]. Homosalate is widely used in sunscreens and SPF-containing skincare products.
