Honey is a viscous, supersaturated sugar solution primarily composed of fructose and glucose, which is being investigated by the Dow University of Health Sciences as a topical treatment for necrotizing fasciitis. It facilitates wound healing through multiple mechanisms: its high osmolarity draws out lymph and dehydrates bacteria; its low pH (acidic) environment inhibits many pathogens; and it produces hydrogen peroxide, which provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against organisms such as MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Additionally, honey promotes autolytic debridement, angiogenesis, and granulation, helping to clear necrotic tissue and accelerate the repair of complex wounds. In clinical trials, specific raw, unprocessed products like Langnese Honey have been compared against standard treatments like EUSOL (Edinburgh University Solution of Lime).
