Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Honeycit is an acetate-free dialysis fluid developed by Gambro Lundia AB (now part of Baxter). It is specifically designed for use in patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. Unlike conventional dialysis fluids that utilize acetate as an acidifying and buffering agent, Honeycit replaces acetate with citrate. This substitution serves two primary purposes: it acts as a buffer to maintain systemic acid-base balance and provides regional anticoagulation within the dialysis circuit by chelating ionized calcium. This local anticoagulant effect can potentially reduce the requirement for systemic heparin during dialysis sessions. Honeycit has been evaluated in Phase IV randomized crossover clinical trials in Sweden, where it was compared against standard acetate-containing solutions like Selectbag One to assess its impact on hemodynamic stability and treatment tolerability.
