Overview

Honghua Xiaoyao Tablet is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation used primarily for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menstrual irregularities associated with the TCM pattern of liver depression and qi stagnation. It is a modified version of the classic Xiaoyao San formula, enriched with *Carthamus tinctorius* (Honghua/Safflower) to enhance its blood-activating and stasis-resolving properties. The formula typically includes *Bupleurum chinense*, *Angelica sinensis*, *Paeonia lactiflora*, *Atractylodes macrocephala*, *Poria cocos*, and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis*. It works by regulating the neuroendocrine system, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, and exerting anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. A Phase 4 clinical trial (ChiCTR2300071827) conducted by the Oriental Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine evaluated its efficacy and safety compared to the standard Xiaoyao Pill in women with PMS.
