Hongmeiren citrus polysaccharide is a bioactive carbohydrate extracted from the pulp of the 'Hongmeiren' citrus fruit, a hybrid cultivar noted for its superior mastication traits. It has been investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in inflammatory bowel disease, specifically ulcerative colitis. The polysaccharide functions by restoring intestinal barrier integrity through the upregulation of tight junction proteins such as ZO-1 and Occludin, as well as the mucus layer component MUC2. Additionally, it modulates the gut microbiota by suppressing pathogenic taxa like *Escherichia-Shigella* and *Helicobacter* while enriching beneficial bacteria such as *Akkermansia* and *Dubosiella*. This microbial shift promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly propionate and butyrate, which contribute to intestinal homeostasis. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by reducing pro-inflammatory TNF-α levels and enhancing anti-inflammatory IL-10 expression.
