Overview

The combination "hongqu + gypenosides" (often abbreviated as HG) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation comprising Fermentum Rubrum (hongqu, also known as red yeast rice) and total saponins (gypenosides) extracted from Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Jiaogulan) in a defined weight ratio. Both ingredients are used in TCM for their lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anti-atherosclerotic properties. The combination targets hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, and related metabolic or cardiovascular diseases. Mechanistically, HG modulates lipid metabolism genes, improves oxidative and inflammatory profiles, and supports hepatic function, with effects reportedly superior to either ingredient alone or to simvastatin in preclinical models[1][2][3].
