Overview

Hop flower powder is a botanical preparation derived from the dried strobiles of the *Humulus lupulus* plant. It is widely used in traditional medicine and as a dietary supplement for its sedative, anxiolytic, and estrogenic properties. The pharmacological activity is attributed to a complex mixture of secondary metabolites, including bitter acids (humulones and lupulones), volatile oils (such as myrcene and humulene), and prenylated flavonoids. Notably, the flavonoid 8-prenylnaringenin is recognized as one of the most potent known phytoestrogens, contributing to the use of hops in managing menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. The sedative effects are believed to result from the modulation of the GABAergic system, potentially through the degradation of bitter acids into 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, which enhances GABA-A receptor activity. Hops are frequently formulated in combination with other sedative herbs, such as valerian, to treat sleep disorders and restlessness.
