Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Houpu Mahuang decoction is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula originating from the *Jin Kui Yao Lue* (Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber) by Zhang Zhongjing. It is primarily used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by "external cold and internal drinking" (phlegm-fluid), such as bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The formula typically consists of *Magnolia officinalis* (Houpu), *Ephedra sinica* (Mahuang), *Gypsum fibrosum* (Shigao), *Prunus armeniaca* (Xingren), *Pinellia ternata* (Banxia), *Zingiber officinale* (Ganjiang), *Asarum sieboldii* (Xixin), *Schisandra chinensis* (Wuweizi), and *Triticum aestivum* (Xiaomai). Its pharmacological effects include bronchodilation, reduction of airway inflammation, and regulation of mucus secretion, largely attributed to the alkaloids in Ephedra and the phenolic compounds in Magnolia. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for its efficacy in improving the control rate of chronic asthma.
