Overview

House dust mite allergen + rhinovirus 16 is an experimental combination of biological agents used in a clinical research setting to model and investigate the interaction between allergen-induced airway inflammation and viral-induced asthma exacerbations. The combination consists of an inhaled house dust mite allergen extract and nasally administered live Rhinovirus 16 (RV16). The house dust mite allergen provokes a Type 2 inflammatory response characterized by increased sputum eosinophils and exhaled nitric oxide. [14] RV16, a common cold virus, induces a distinct inflammatory profile characterized by an increase in sputum neutrophils and neutrophil elastase. A clinical study in patients with mild to moderate asthma found that sequential exposure to a low dose of the allergen followed by RV16 infection did not result in a synergistic or additive effect on clinical or inflammatory outcomes, suggesting that this level of preceding allergen exposure is not a key determinant for the severity of RV-induced exacerbations.
