Overview

House dust mite allergen extract is a biologic immunotherapy used to treat allergic rhinitis, with or without conjunctivitis, caused by sensitization to house dust mites (Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus)[1][2][5]. It is available as sublingual tablets (Odactra, Actair) and as standardized injectable extracts. The mechanism of action involves exposing the immune system to controlled amounts of the relevant allergens to induce tolerance; this leads to increased IgG antibodies that compete with IgE antibodies responsible for allergy symptoms and may also modulate T-cell responses[8]. The primary indication is for patients with confirmed house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis. Odactra is approved for use in individuals aged 5 through 65 years[5].
