House dust mite and Alternaria allergen extracts are biological preparations used for diagnostic bronchial allergen challenges (BAC) in pediatric patients. Developed and studied at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital, these extracts are administered via inhalation in a dose-escalation manner to assess airway hyperreactivity and the safety of allergen exposure in children with house dust mite or Alternaria allergies. The procedure involves inhaling increasing concentrations of saline-dissolved lyophilized allergens to monitor changes in forced expiratory volume (FEV1), helping to identify predictors for positive bronchial reactions and to evaluate changes in bronchial hyperreactivity following allergen-specific immunotherapy.
