Overview

House dust mite subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) is a form of allergen-specific immunotherapy in which standardized extracts of house dust mites (most commonly Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae) are administered via regular subcutaneous injections. The therapy aims to desensitize the immune system to the allergens by gradually increasing exposure over time, thereby reducing allergic symptoms and modifying disease progression. The mechanism involves induction of immune tolerance through modulation of T-cell responses and increased production of blocking IgG antibodies against the allergens. House dust mite SCIT is primarily indicated for patients with moderate-to-severe allergic rhinitis or asthma triggered by confirmed sensitization to house dust mites who do not achieve adequate control with standard pharmacological therapies[1][2][3][4][5]. It has been shown to reduce symptoms, decrease medication use, and lower risk of developing asthma in patients with allergic rhinitis[1][3]. Treatment typically requires an initial build-up phase followed by maintenance injections over 3–5 years[7][9].
