Overview

House dust mite sublingual allergen extract is a sublingual allergen immunotherapy (SLIT) preparation used to treat house dust mite (HDM)-induced perennial allergic rhinitis and its comorbid allergic conditions, such as allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis. It consists of standardized allergen extracts from house dust mite species, primarily *Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus* and *Dermatophagoides farinae*. Administered sublingually (under the tongue) as drops or rapidly dissolving tablets, the extract works by exposing the patient's immune system to gradual, controlled doses of HDM allergens (such as Der p 1, Der p 2, Der f 1, and Der f 2). This exposure induces immunological tolerance by promoting the production of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies and modulating T-cell responses (e.g., downregulating Th2-mediated hypersensitivity). Several commercial formulations exist, including ALK-Abelló's Odactra/Acarizax and SLITone ULTRA, Stallergenes Greer's Actair and Staloral 300, and Torii Pharmaceutical's Miticure. It has also been evaluated in clinical studies by institutions such as the Allergy Centre at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital.
