Overview

Houttuynia cordata is a perennial herb native to East and Southeast Asia and widely used in traditional Chinese medicine as well as a food ingredient. The aerial parts of the plant are used medicinally for their anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, immunomodulatory and organ-protective properties[1][5][6]. Modern research has shown that extracts of Houttuynia cordata can inhibit mast cell activity and histamine release (anti-allergic), modulate inflammatory pathways (anti-inflammatory), regulate the gut microbiome (metabolic effects), support immune function (immunomodulation), exhibit direct antiviral activity against viruses such as HSV-1 and influenza virus[1][7], exert antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi[8], promote apoptosis in tumor cells via inhibition of NRF2 signaling pathway (antitumor)[6], and may inhibit 5-alpha reductase to reduce DHT levels relevant for hair loss[8]. Its main active constituents include flavonoids (such as quercetin), volatile oils (e.g., β-myrcene), alkaloids like aristololactam derivatives[6], phenolic acids and polyphenols. It is commonly consumed as a tincture or dietary supplement for immune support or inflammation; it is also an ingredient in some cosmetic products. There are no high-quality clinical trials confirming its efficacy for any indication; severe allergic reactions have been reported with injectable forms[9].
