Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Houttuynia cordata extract is a botanical extract derived from the Houttuynia cordata plant, a flowering herb native to Southeast Asia. Historically used in traditional Chinese medicine, it is now widely incorporated into cosmetics, dietary supplements, and veterinary products. The extract is rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids (such as quercetin, quercitrin, hyperoside, and rutin), phenolic acids, essential oils, alkaloids, and polysaccharides. Its mechanism of action involves a multifaceted approach, exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and immunomodulatory properties. It functions by inhibiting inflammatory mediators like COX-2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and TLR4, while upregulating IL-10. It also acts as a free radical scavenger, combats various bacteria (e.g., Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis), and modulates immune cell activity and antibody production. In skincare, it is valued for soothing irritation, reducing acne, regulating sebum production, and providing protection against oxidative stress and UVB damage. Internally, it supports gut health, immune function, and detoxification. Studies have also explored its potential in inducing apoptosis in cancer cells and strengthening capillaries.
