Overview

HPH-15 is a novel compound developed by Kumamoto University scientists. It exhibits dual effects, reducing blood glucose levels and combating fat accumulation. Its primary mechanism involves activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a critical protein regulating energy balance. Additionally, HPH-15 has shown antifibrotic properties by inhibiting TGF-β/Smad signaling and also inhibits cell migration by binding to heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein U (hnRNP U). Preclinical studies suggest it outperforms metformin in efficacy for glucose uptake and fat reduction, with a comparable or lower risk of lactic acidosis. It is being investigated for type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver, and systemic sclerosis.
