Overview

HPL1 (also known as HPL-1) is a proprietary, human-derived liver cell line developed by HepaLife Technologies for use in bioartificial liver (BAL) devices. It was designed to provide essential metabolic support, including detoxification and protein synthesis, to patients suffering from acute liver failure. Unlike traditional BAL systems that utilized porcine hepatocytes, HPL1 was marketed as the first human-derived cell line capable of performing the complex functions of a natural liver within an extracorporeal circuit. The cell line was intended to serve as a bridge to transplantation or to support liver regeneration in patients with reversible hepatic damage. However, development of the HPL1-based bioartificial liver system appears to have been discontinued following corporate restructuring and shifts in the developer's strategic focus.
