Overview

HPPH (Photochlor) is a second-generation, chlorin-based photosensitizer used in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Upon intravenous administration, HPPH selectively accumulates in the cytoplasm of cancer or pre-cancerous cells. When exposed to 660 nm laser light, it induces the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to targeted tumor cell death. HPPH has been investigated for use in treating various cancers, including head and neck cancer and Barrett's esophagus with high-grade dysplasia or early carcinoma. It is designed to offer improved tumor selectivity and reduced skin photosensitivity compared to first-generation agents.
