Overview

HPV-specific cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are a form of adoptive cell therapy in which a patient's immune effector cells are expanded and activated ex vivo using specific cytokines and then redirected to target human papillomavirus (HPV)-infected or HPV-associated tumor cells. These CIK cells possess both T cell and natural killer (NK) cell properties, enabling them to recognize and kill cancerous or virally infected targets in an MHC-unrestricted manner. The mechanism of action involves the direct cytotoxicity against HPV-infected or transformed cervical cancer cells, often mediated by upregulation of activating receptors such as NKG2D on the CIK/NK-like population, as well as secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines that enhance anti-tumor immunity[1][2]. This approach is being explored primarily for the treatment of cervical cancer and other malignancies associated with persistent high-risk HPV infection.
