HPV16mE7 is a mutant, non-transforming version of the Human Papillomavirus 16 (HPV16) E7 oncogenic protein. It is being investigated as a therapeutic vaccine candidate for HPV-associated cancers, particularly cervical cancer. The E7 protein is crucial for the development and maintenance of HPV16-induced cancers by binding to the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor protein (pRb) and other cellular proteins, acting as a transcriptional activator. HPV16mE7 is designed to retain its immunogenicity while lacking the oncogenic potential of the wild-type E7 protein. Its mechanism involves eliciting an antigen-specific immune response, primarily cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, against cells expressing the HPV16 E7 protein, thereby inhibiting tumor growth.
