Overview

HRS8179 is an investigational small molecule drug developed by Beijing Suncadia Pharmaceuticals for the prevention and treatment of severe cerebral edema following large hemispheric infarction (LHI), a form of brain swelling that can occur after major ischemic stroke. The drug acts as a selective sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR1) inhibitor, antagonizing the ABCC8 protein. By blocking SUR1-regulated sodium channels that are upregulated after ischemic stroke, HRS8179 aims to reduce brain swelling and improve neurological outcomes. Clinical trials have shown potential efficacy in reducing midline shift and mortality rates in patients with LHI, with hypoglycemia being the most common adverse event[2][5]. The drug is administered intravenously and is currently in phase II/III clinical development for brain edema.
