Overview

HS219 is a three-layer chewing gum containing 40 mg of chitosan, developed as an adjunctive therapy for hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease patients receiving hemodialysis. It is designed to bind salivary phosphorus in the mouth and reduce phosphorus absorption, acting as an add-on to standard phosphorus binders such as calcium carbonate or sevelamer hydrochloride. Clinical studies have shown HS219 to be safe and well tolerated; however, it did not demonstrate significant efficacy compared to placebo in lowering serum or salivary phosphorus levels in hemodialysis patients with hyperphosphatemia[1][3][5].
