Overview

HSPB4 (Heat Shock Protein Beta-4), also known as alpha-crystallin A chain, is a small heat shock protein (sHSP) being investigated as a recombinant protein therapeutic for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. It functions as a molecular chaperone and a modulator of the innate immune response within the retina. Preclinical research, primarily conducted at the University of Michigan, has demonstrated that recombinant HSPB4 can attenuate microglia activation and reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory markers under diabetic-like stress conditions. By regulating retinal gliosis and inflammation, HSPB4 aims to provide neuroprotection and prevent the gradual degeneration of retinal neurons and associated vision loss characteristic of diabetic retinopathy.
