HSV-2 alphavaccine (AVX-201) is a viral replicon particle (VRP) vaccine developed by AlphaVax for the prevention and treatment of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infections. The vaccine utilizes a propagation-defective RNA replicon vector derived from the Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (VEE) virus. This platform is designed to deliver genetic sequences encoding HSV-2 antigens directly into dendritic cells, where they are expressed to stimulate a potent and balanced immune response, including both neutralizing antibodies and cytotoxic T-cell activity. While the platform showed promise in early-stage clinical trials, the development status of the HSV-2 program has become uncertain following AlphaVax's operational changes.
