Hua Tan Qu Shi decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formula used primarily for the treatment of metabolic diseases such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), coronary heart disease (CHD) with angina after coronary revascularization, and phlegm-dampness constitution-related disorders. The formula typically contains herbs including Magnolia officinalis (Hou Pu), Rhizoma atractylodis (Cang Zhu), Pericarpium citri reticulatae (Chen Pi), Rhizoma pinellinae praeparata (Ban Xia), Curcuma zedoary (E Zhu), and Acorus tatarinowii (Shi Chang Pu)[3]. Mechanistically, it has been shown to improve biomedical indicators such as blood glucose, HbA1c, insulin levels, and HDL-C in patients with metabolic syndrome[8]. Experimental studies suggest that its effects are mediated through modulation of signaling pathways including PI3K-Akt and TLR4/NF-κB/Akt/HIF-1α[3][8], possibly via regulation of miRNAs like hsa-miR-1237–3p targeting genes such as CRK and HGF. The active small molecules identified in the formula include naringin and baicalin[3]. Clinical trials have evaluated its efficacy for NAFLD[1], CHD-related angina post-revascularization[2][3], and improvement of metabolic parameters in phlegm-dampness constitution individuals[8].
