huaier

Huaier is a medicinal fungus (*Trametes robiniophila* Murr) that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries and is currently utilized as an adjuvant therapy for various malignancies. The drug is primarily administered as an oral granule extract. Its therapeutic effects are attributed to a complex mixture of polysaccharides, proteins, and minerals, which collectively exhibit anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, and anti-angiogenic properties. Huaier is most notably recognized for its clinical efficacy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); a large-scale Phase IV clinical trial demonstrated that Huaier granules significantly prolonged recurrence-free survival and reduced recurrence rates in patients following curative liver resection. Beyond HCC, it is being investigated for its potential in treating breast, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers by modulating signaling pathways such as STAT3, NF-κB, and VEGF, as well as enhancing host immune function.
