Overview

Huang Qi Gui Zhi Wu Wu Tang is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula originating from the "Essentials from the Golden Cabinet" (c. 220 AD). It consists of five herbs: Astragalus root (huang qi), Cinnamon twig (gui zhi), White peony root (bai shao), Ginger root (sheng jiang), and Jujube fruit (da zao)[2][5][9]. The formula is designed to tonify Qi and Blood, warm and harmonize the channels and collaterals, dispel wind-cold-dampness, unblock painful obstruction ("Bi syndrome"), harmonize Ying and Wei Qi, alleviate numbness/pain in muscles or extremities due to blood stasis or deficiency patterns[1][3][7]. Mechanistically in TCM terms it augments Qi—especially Wei Qi—warms meridians/channels to relieve pain/numbness/stiffness associated with wind-cold invasion in patients with underlying deficiency[1][7]. Modern research has explored its use for rheumatoid arthritis as well as diabetic neuropathy, Raynaud's disease, sequelae of stroke/CVA, coronary artery disease/angina pectoris among others[5][9].
