Overview
Huanghe decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by The Seventh People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, specifically targeting the lung-spleen qi deficiency syndrome. The formula is composed of several botanical ingredients, including *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huangqi) and *Nelumbo nucifera* (He Ye), which are thought to work synergistically to modulate the immune system. Its mechanism of action involves balancing the Th1/Th2 immune response by suppressing the production of Th2-associated cytokines like interleukin-4 (IL-4) and promoting Th1-associated cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). This shift leads to a reduction in serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and the stabilization of mast cells, thereby alleviating clinical symptoms such as nasal itching, sneezing, and rhinorrhea.
