Overview

Huangjing is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the rhizomes of species in the genus *Polygonatum*, most commonly *Polygonatum sibiricum*, *Polygonatum kingianum*, or *Polygonatum cyrtonema*. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is classified as a tonic herb used to replenish qi, nourish yin, and moisten the lungs and spleen. It contains various bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids, which are thought to provide anti-aging, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is frequently used in formulations for conditions associated with yin deficiency, such as fatigue, dry cough, and diabetes-like symptoms (xiao ke). Clinical research, such as the study of Huangjing Qiyuan ointment, has explored its topical application for systemic yin deficiency symptoms.
