Overview
Huanglian capsule is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation formulated as an oral capsule containing the extract of *Coptis chinensis* (Rhizoma Coptidis / Huanglian). The primary active components of Huanglian are isoquinoline alkaloids, most notably berberine, which exhibit potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective properties. In TCM, Huanglian is traditionally used to clear heat, dry dampness, purge fire, and detoxify. Clinically, Huanglian capsule has been evaluated, often in combination with other TCM formulations like Gongshao capsule (or Xiongshao capsule), for the treatment of unstable angina pectoris and coronary heart disease, where it is thought to target inflammatory pathways and improve endothelial function.
