Overview
Huanglian Ejiao is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation, primarily developed and marketed by Shandong Dong'e Ejiao Co., Ltd., based on the classic 'Huanglian Ejiao Tang' decoction first described in the *Shanghan Lun*. It is indicated for the treatment of chronic insomnia, anxiety, and irritability, conditions often associated in TCM with 'yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity' or 'heart-kidney disharmony.' The formula is a combination of *Coptis chinensis* (Huanglian), *Asini Corii Colla* (Ejiao/donkey-hide gelatin), *Scutellaria baicalensis*, *Paeonia lactiflora*, and egg yolk. Pharmacologically, Huanglian Ejiao is thought to exert its sedative and anxiolytic effects by modulating the GABAergic system (specifically GABA-A receptors) and the serotonergic system, while also reducing neuroinflammation through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha. It is widely available in China in modern dosage forms such as granules and capsules.
