Huanglian Jiedu Decoction

Huanglian Jiedu Decoction is a classical traditional Chinese medicine formula composed of four herbs: Rhizoma coptidis (Huanglian), Radix scutellariae (Huangqin), Cortex phellodendri (Huangbo), and Fructus gardeniae (Zhizi) in a ratio of 3:2:2:3. It was first described in "Waitai Miyao" during the Tang dynasty and has been used for thousands of years in China as a heat-clearing and detoxifying agent. The main active components include berberine, baicalin, wogonoside, and gardenoside. It functions by clearing heat and detoxification, with each herb targeting different areas of the body: Huanglian reduces fire from the upper-jiao, Huangqin from the middle-jiao, Huangbo from the under-jiao, and Zhizi provides general heat clearing and detoxification. Modern research has identified several mechanisms of action including anti-inflammatory effects through reducing inflammatory factors (IL-6, TNF-α), antitumor activity, and neuroprotective effects. It has been studied for various conditions including multiple myeloma, Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, pneumonia, and inflammatory conditions.
