Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Huanglian Jiedu Pill is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed and refined by the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences Institute of Chinese Materia Medica. It is based on the classic Huanglian Jiedu Tang formula, which consists of four key herbs: *Coptis chinensis* (Huanglian), *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Huangqin), *Phellodendron amurense* (Huangbai), and *Gardenia jasminoides* (Zhizi). The pill is indicated for excess heat and fire toxin syndrome, a TCM diagnostic category that encompasses conditions such as acute pharyngitis, recurrent aphthous ulcers, gingivitis, and constipation. Its therapeutic effects are driven by a synergistic blend of alkaloids (notably berberine), flavonoids (such as baicalin), and iridoids (such as geniposide). These components exert broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities by inhibiting the NF-kappaB signaling pathway and reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-6.
