Huanglian Wendan Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula composed of multiple botanical ingredients. It is primarily used for clearing heat from the gallbladder, harmonizing the stomach, regulating Qi, and transforming phlegm. The formula is traditionally indicated for conditions involving gallbladder and stomach disharmony with phlegm-heat manifestations such as restlessness, irritability, insomnia, dizziness, chronic bronchitis or gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, anxiety disorders (including neurosis), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), metabolic syndrome-related symptoms ("Re"), and certain mental health disturbances including schizoid behavior and autism[1][3][6][7]. Modern studies suggest it may improve sleep quality by modulating GABA type A receptor activity[6], lower blood glucose and lipid levels in T2DM patients[7], exert anti-inflammatory effects via gingerol components[1], protect against cognitive impairment in metabolic disorders[2], and support neuroprotection. The mechanism of action involves multi-target modulation including neurotransmitter systems (notably GABAergic pathways), anti-inflammatory/antioxidant effects from its herbal constituents such as gingerols from Zingiber officinale Rosc., flavonoids like hesperidin from Citrus species[8], alkaloids like berberine from Coptis chinensis Franch., among others.
