Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination formula, consisting of two classic prescriptions—Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang (黄芪桂枝五物汤) and Buyang Huanwu Tang (补阳还五汤). Both are decoctions used in TCM for conditions characterized by qi deficiency and blood stasis. Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang is composed of astragalus root (黄芪), cinnamon twig (桂枝), peony root (芍药), fresh ginger (生姜), and jujube fruit (大枣). It is primarily used to warm the meridians, tonify qi, harmonize the nutritive and defensive aspects, and unblock channels to relieve numbness or pain due to blood deficiency or stagnation[2][6][7][8]. Buyang Huanwu Tang contains astragalus root, angelica tail, red peony root, earthworm, ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome, peach kernel, and safflower. Its main actions are supplementing qi to promote blood circulation and unblocking collaterals; it is widely used for post-stroke sequelae such as hemiplegia or facial paralysis[1][4][5]. The combination aims to synergistically enhance both formulas’ effects on replenishing qi (“vital energy”), activating blood flow (“huoxue”), resolving stasis (“huayu”), unblocking meridians (“tongluo”), relieving numbness/pain/weakness in limbs due to stroke or neuropathy[1][4]. Modern research suggests these formulas may improve microcirculation, modulate immune function via polysaccharides/flavonoids from astragalus etc., reduce inflammation/oxidative stress/thrombosis risk factors relevant in neurological recovery[4].
