Overview
Huangqi Tang (黄芪汤) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula primarily used to tonify Qi (vital energy), strengthen the Spleen, nourish the Blood, eliminate Dampness, and promote urination. It is composed of multiple herbs with Astragalus root (Huang Qi) as a principal ingredient. The formula is traditionally indicated for conditions such as edema due to Spleen Qi deficiency and Wind-Damp accumulation. Its mechanism of action in Traditional Chinese Medicine involves supporting fluid metabolism by augmenting defensive qi (wei qi), promoting diuresis to reduce water retention, and regulating water circulation in the body[3][4][8]. The classic source for this formula is "Essentials from the Golden Cabinet" (220 AD)[3].
