Overview

Huangqin is the dried root of *Scutellaria baicalensis* Georgi, a cornerstone herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) traditionally used to clear heat and dry dampness. In modern clinical research, it is investigated for its potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifibrotic properties. The herb contains bioactive flavonoids, most notably baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin, which modulate key signaling pathways involved in tissue remodeling and inflammation, such as the TGF-beta/Smad and NF-kappaB pathways. It is currently being studied by the Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine as a component of a herbal formula for the treatment of progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF), specifically targeting the phlegm heat-blood stasis pattern of the disease.
