Huangqin Decoction is a classical traditional Chinese medicinal formula originating from the ancient text *Shang Han Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage) and has been used for nearly 1,800 years. It consists of four main herbal ingredients: the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (skullcap), Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice), Paeonia lactiflora (peony), and the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba (jujube). The formula is primarily indicated for gastrointestinal disorders such as bacillary dysentery, acute colitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and other heat-related digestive conditions. Mechanistically, Huangqin Decoction exerts anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway and modulating gut microbiota to improve intestinal health. Key active compounds include baicalin and wogonoside.
