Overview

Huangyaozi is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) derived from the rhizome of *Dioscorea bulbifera* L. It has historically been used in TCM for treating thyroid disorders, cough, and various inflammatory conditions. In modern research, it has been investigated for potential anticancer and cardioprotective properties, particularly in compound prescriptions. However, its clinical utility is severely limited by significant hepatotoxicity; a Phase II trial conducted at the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was suspended after nearly 19% of participants experienced liver function impairment. The toxicity is primarily attributed to diterpene lactones, such as diosbulbin B, which are characteristic constituents of the plant.
