Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Huanshaodan is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) multi-herb formula first recorded in the 12th century and used for centuries as a tonic to "rejuvenate" the body. It typically contains 13–16 herbs with principal ingredients including prepared rehmannia root (Shu Di Huang) and goji berries (Gou Qi Zi). The formula is designed to tonify Yin and Yang of the Spleen, Heart, and Kidneys; nourish blood; augment Qi; fortify Yang; and promote longevity. In TCM practice it is used for patterns such as kidney essence deficiency or combined kidney/spleen yang deficiency—conditions that may manifest as fatigue, low libido/impotence or spermatorrhea in men, memory loss/forgetfulness in elders or symptoms of premature aging[1][3][4][5]. Modern research suggests Huanshaodan may have anti-aging effects by reducing oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA[2], improving learning/memory deficits via modulation of microglial glucose metabolism through mTOR/HIF-1α signaling[6], regulating immune function[5], and potentially benefiting conditions like Alzheimer's disease[6], anemia/blood disorders[5], frailty syndrome in elderly patients[7] and more. Its chemical profile includes hundreds of metabolites with ginsenosides among those identified as potential active anti-aging components[8].
