Overview
Huatan Dingji Fang (HTDJ) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed at Longhua Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Created by Professor Lin Zhongxiang, the formula is specifically indicated for patients presenting with the TCM syndrome of 'qi deficiency and phlegm opacities' (palpitation of Qi deficiency-caused phlegm stagnation). It is a complex decoction comprising sixteen herbs, including *Pinellia ternata*, *Astragalus membranaceus*, *Coptis chinensis*, and *Sophora flavescens*. HTDJ is thought to exert antiarrhythmic effects through multiple mechanisms, including the modulation of cardiac electrophysiology and providing cardiovascular protection, potentially via active constituents like matrine, artemisinin, and icariin. The formula is currently being investigated in randomized, double-blind clinical trials as an adjunctive therapy to standard Western medicine for AF management.
