Overview
Huatan Quyu is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Shaanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically designed for the treatment of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). The formula is based on the TCM therapeutic principle of resolving phlegm (Huatan) and removing blood stasis (Quyu), which addresses the underlying pathology of 'phlegm-stasis blocking the collaterals' often seen in elderly patients with cognitive impairment or gait disturbances. Huatan Quyu typically consists of a combination of herbal ingredients such as Pinellia ternata, Ligusticum chuanxiong, and Salvia miltiorrhiza. It exerts its therapeutic effects by improving cerebral microcirculation, reducing neuroinflammation, and protecting the integrity of the blood-brain barrier. Clinical research conducted at the sponsoring hospital has focused on its ability to improve cognitive scores and reduce the progression of white matter hyperintensities in patients with CSVD.
