Huayu Qiangshen Tongbi Formula

Huayu Qiangshen Tongbi Formula (HQT) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal decoction developed by the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine (also known as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The formula is composed of ten natural herbs, including Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), Dioscorea nipponica (Chuanshanlong), Astragalus membranaceus (Huangqi), Paeonia lactiflora (Baishao), and Saussurea involucrata. HQT is designed to alleviate joint swelling and pain, improve joint function, and modulate inflammation. Mechanistically, studies suggest HQT attenuates RA by upregulating miR-125b, which suppresses NF-κB-induced inflammation by targeting casein kinase II (CK2), and by regulating gut microbiota and bone metabolism. It has been evaluated in clinical trials in combination with methotrexate (MTX) for active rheumatoid arthritis.
