Overview

hucMSC-derived exosomes (HucMSC-Exos) are extracellular vesicles, typically ranging from 30 to 150 nm in diameter, secreted by human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs). These vesicles serve as a biologic therapeutic modality that facilitates intercellular communication by delivering a complex cargo of proteins (such as insulin and superoxide dismutase 1), mRNAs, and microRNAs (notably miR-133b) to recipient cells. In the context of Parkinson's disease, HucMSC-Exos have demonstrated the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and reach the substantia nigra, where they exert neuroprotective effects by inducing autophagy and inhibiting the apoptosis of dopaminergic neurons. Preclinical research suggests their therapeutic potential across a wide spectrum of conditions, including type 1 diabetes, liver fibrosis, acute kidney injury, wound healing, and myocardial infarction, primarily through anti-inflammatory and regenerative mechanisms.
