Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Huisheng Oral Liquid (HSOS) is a traditional Chinese patent medicine used for the treatment of primary liver and lung cancer. [1, 4] It is derived from two classical prescriptions, 'Biejiajian Wan' from 'Jin Gui Yao Lue' and 'Huisheng Dan' from 'Wan Bing Hui Chun'. [1] The stated functions of the medicine are to eliminate masses (消癥) and resolve blood stasis (化瘀). [1] Pharmacological studies suggest it may interfere with cancer cell DNA synthesis, affect the cell cycle, and induce apoptosis. [1] It is also reported to improve hypercoagulability in tumor patients, reduce the formation of blood clots, and lower levels of the tumor marker VEGF. [1] Clinical studies have investigated its use as an adjunctive therapy for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), with some research suggesting that treatment for three months or longer is associated with a higher survival rate in patients with stage II-III NSCLC. It is also used in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy to potentially enhance efficacy and reduce toxicity. [1, 9] The medicine is a complex mixture of 34 different herbs, including Panax ginseng, Angelica sinensis, and Rheum rhabarbarum. [1]
